Dont know how you can say these numbers I put up are way off. I have been told these numbers by a number of trainers I know in So. Cal. If you go to some barns I am certain there is not a groom for 5 horses, so the number per horse would be less than 20.00. If the groom has 10 horses, only 9-10 cost would be per horse, per day. I know the food and bedding are very close per day. Some guys are a little below on food and some top barns spend a bit more. But then they charge 100.00 day rate. All the numbers I used were per day.
You said one groom for 5 horses $20 a day. $10 a day per rider. $5.00 for bedding. I must have misunderstood your calculations.

tell you something else, i wouldnt let a trainer at a major track train my horse(s) if his/her grooms were taking care of 5 horses. big time trainers have the grooms with 4 horses at the most and some with 2 or 3.

no such thing. they make some on the day money but get 10% of the purse. lots of these guys have money and its almost a hobby for them, others barely get by each month. but these guys who have 40 or 50 horses are making a nice living even if they arent that good. lets say a trainer has 40 horses and makes $7.00 a day on each from day money and wins 3 races a month that have $1,500.00 per race going to the trainer that $11,400.00 A MONTH/ $138k a year. but let me tell ya that guy works his azz off never gets a day off and is probably buried in debt and lives month to month.

no groom has 9 or 10 horses even in the minor leagues. generally at big tracks grooms have 4 or less horses.
I know in So Cal 4 to 5 grooms per horse is close to standard for the top outfits (mostly 5). But I could name a dozen very well known trainers who have 1 or 2 grooms (foremen and a groom) on staff for about 15-20 horses. I do believe strongly in you get what you pay for in So Cal..if you are paying a drastically reduced rate you are getting short changed somewhere. Training at GG is about 60-65 a day, Turf Paradise 35-45 a day. Obviously none of these trainers are in business to lose money. They cut down on grooms, riders, food quality to get down the where they can get by and still make a buck for themselves. Training rate is largely tied in to what they can get away with in the tracks purse structure. Anyone who believes these guys make nothing at 100.00 a day/rate has drank the kool aid. Do they make a lot of that 100.00, no. But if you have 30-50 horses you are doing very well even if you win at a 5% clip.

Sharp post. Some trainers can supplement by receiving commissions for horses bought for clients or get a bonus if a horse is sold for a big profit.

Or marking up horses they buy and sell to individuals or partnerships (known as the Headley) or even better selling ownership shares in imaginary horses (known as the Monte).

The Monte scam was popular in Chicago in flats and buggies in the 80's. Quite a few of those involved are not with us anymore. FACT.
