Serious Question-Trainers

Do trainers make any money off day money? If not, how do guys like Ted West, Craig Lewis, Ben Cecil etc who only win a handful of races each year make a living in SoCal?

OMG this is the question my buddies and I laught at all the time. They all say they make nothing. I find that almost impossible to believe at 95++ a day. I see guys all the time who never win driving in and out of the track in brand new BMW's, Porsches, Mercedes. I dont have a problem with these guys making money, its hard work, but just get tired of the line that they are losing money on day rate. Figure food might be 20 a day, one groom for 5 horses is 20 a day. Workmans comp maybe another 10. Riders maybe another 10 a day. Bedding maybe 5. I think 65 a day might be the cost. So if a small guy has 20 horses and charges 85 a day I think he is making 400.00 a day/ 12,000 a month. I find it hard believe anyone with more than a few horses is losing money.

There are some trainers at GGF who have less than 5-6 horses with records of 1/90 and such.

How do they make a living?

I don't really have a take on this thread. However some of your calculations are way off. A groom with 5 horses makes significantly more than $140 a week. Riders $10 a day. ludicrous. Bedding $5. On what planet? When you're at the track. There are many trainers who are very approachable. They'll take their time to share how everything breaks down.

Grooms make about 90.00 a day. I assumed a groom has five horses, so of each horses day rate, 20.00 would go to pay this grooms pay. Dont know how you can say these numbers I put up are way off. I have been told these numbers by a number of trainers I know in So. Cal. If you go to some barns I am certain there is not a groom for 5 horses, so the number per horse would be less than 20.00. If the groom has 10 horses, only 9-10 cost would be per horse, per day. I know the food and bedding are very close per day. Some guys are a little below on food and some top barns spend a bit more. But then they charge 100.00 day rate. All the numbers I used were per day.

I thought of that but that just means they're spending much less time on their race horses, which makes sense since they're .000001% trainers.

Or they're selling crack on the side which also makes sense since these trainers are located near Oaktown and/or TT's beloved Buzzerkeley.

no groom has 9 or 10 horses even in the minor leagues. generally at big tracks grooms have 4 or less horses.
