Santa Anita: Flashback misses scheduled work, will pass Sham Stakes
By Steve Andersen

Flashback will miss a planned start in the Sham Stakes on Jan. 5 at Santa Anita.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Flashback, considered one of trainer Bob Baffert’s top 3-year-old prospects for 2013, missed a scheduled workout at Santa Anita on Friday after Baffert and jockey Martin Garcia said they were unhappy with the colt’s condition in the moments before the exercise.

Flashback was considered a candidate for the $100,000 Sham Stakes over a mile on Jan. 5 until Friday’s setback.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Flashback was being prepared for a workout when Garcia and Baffert spoke via radio and decided to abandon the workout.

At the time, Flashback did not have a fluid motion in his hind end.

After being observed at the barn later in the morning, Baffert said that no injuries had surfaced, but that the colt will be monitored over the weekend.

“We’ll keep an eye on him for a couple of days and see if anything comes up,” he said. “We’ll do some tests. I thought it might have been a foot. Something happened between the barn and going out there.”

Owned by Gary and Mary West, Flashback won a seven-furlong maiden race by 3 1/2 lengths in 1:23.09, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 93. Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Flashback closed from fourth to record an impressive win.

The Grade 3 Sham Stakes is the first stakes in the buildup to the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 6. Without Flashback as a possible starter, Baffert said Friday that he is unsure what runners he will have in the race.

The list of candidates is led by Goldencents, winner of the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in Louisiana in November.
