I supposed management is somewhat happy for a weekday, middle of the week opening.

What about the P-6?

Postby Andyc » Thu Dec 27, 2012 8:58 am

With handle up 5% and the new bonus plan for on-track P-6 play you would have expected a big bump in play. Last year on opening day the P-6 pool was $277,394 and this year it was $268,562. I'd be interested to know the on-track/off-track splits for P-6 betting for last year and this year. Although 1 day does not make a trend, it would appear that if the promotion to bring P-6 bettors on-track is working it is at the expense of off-track bets and it is not enticing additional P-6 play.

As a Pick 6 Player, why would I want to continue pouring money into the pool through my ADW or OTB, if I know I will be getting a much smaller expected return over the long run compared to those that bet on-track?

I'm going to predict the amount of money this idea loses from off-track with be more than the amount of gains of on-track Pick 6 handle.

Isn't betting horses all about VALUE? And there are 17X the number of bettors off-track, than on..

The 5% up number is very, very, very, shaky. I think wagering on races run at Santa Anita was down well over 10% and probably closer to -13%. Then again they had two races taken off the turf and that cause some scratches but something is way off with the numbers.

But then there is this tweet between Ray Paulick and TVG yesterday. That would lead you to think that Santa Anita was up quite a bit.

Will be interesting for numbers crunchers to see how much handle @TVG gained @santaanitapark opening day now that it has broadcast rights

@raypaulick up 31% before the last race on last year. We'll let you know the full story later.

A friend of mine won the Pick 6 yesterday and was at Santa Anita. When he went to collect after the last race, and inquired about the 20% bonus, they said, sorry, the bonus doesn't start until January 1st.

That's sticking it to the pick 6 players,

I guess we have to read the fine print.
