Just because you don't remember the '80s, doesn't mean you weren't here.

Just because you don't remember the '80s, doesn't mean you weren't here. I hate it when I don't forward chain letter and I die the next day!
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback Speculation
1986 was the 1st KY Derby I attended. I wagered on Snow Chief. Chart: http://static.kentuckyderby.com/sites/k ... s/1986.pdf Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuMp9AjKqf0 Is this the Derby where The Shoe beat Pat Day to the hole? One of those woulda coulda shoulda for Rampage. Last edited by Pooch on Fri Jan 04, 2013 9:26 am, edited 1 time in total.
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback SpeculationThat was great decision what the Shoe did after watching it last night. A great risk taker.
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback Speculation
That was the first Derby I ever bet on (no wagering in Texas then), we went to Evangeline Downs. I had $5 ATB on #6 Broad Brush, he got 3rd. At 60-1, I bet $3 win on Groovy, finished DFL, but I knew he would be on the lead so I bet him. Hazy, but I think I bet something on Snow Cheif also. My lady friend bet on Shoemaker, her first bet ever. The odds were even higher on Ferd in Louisiana. Man it was a long ride back to Houston. America must have the highest "goofs per capita" rating of any nation outside Antarctica.
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback Speculationthat race changed and ruined the derby future bets in nevada. i was living at so tahoe working at a casino, my roomate was a graveyard shift
bacarrat dealer. he came home from work one morning a couple of days before the derby and told me they had some super high rollers from texas betting millions at the bacarrat table that night. and they told the dealers/floormen that they were in tahoe to bet the derby and they had ferdinand. millions were spread out all over the state on the horse in the futures. the state of nevada and all the casinos took the worst loss in the history of nevada on that race. from 1987 forth they never gave those big future odds again. this year the longest shot in the 2013 futures was less than 500to1, in those days you could get 10,000 to 1 early on in the futures on hundreds of horses, now the casinos wont gamble. if you walk into a casino today and want to make a bet on an oklahoma bred maiden who has been getting beat for a $3,200 tag they wont give you 500to1 and that started with ferdinand
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback Speculation
Cool story, bro. I guess Agua Caliente in TJ didn't get that memo. The following year they got killed for millions when a bettor made a $50,000 Future bet on Winning Colors at humongous odds.. While Las Vegas receives tons of press when a sportsbook takes a $1 million bet on the Super Bowl, not many people know about the time Caliente had to pay out seven figures to a Mexican National who cashed in on a $50,000 futures bet on Winning Colors in the 1988 Kentucky Derby. Regardless of the big payout, de la Fuente said he would take the risk again if it came from the right bettor. "If we know the customer, he will probably get special treatment," he stated.
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback SpeculationAfter retirement, (Chris) McCarron tried a turn in the front office at Santa Anita and behind the microphone as a racing analyst for TVG.
“I saw some horrendous rides,” McCarron said. “There were many times sitting alongside Todd Schrupp and those guys I thought, ‘Dammit, I wish I was out there.’ I would think that has gone through Gary’s mind more than once.” http://www.drf.com/news/jay-hovdey-stev ... -does-best
Re: [WAS] Gary Stevens Dashes Comeback Speculationif gary stevens gets on the right horses you will never be able to tell he ever took a break. if he doesnt he will be to old.
imo the most over rated jockey ever was jerry baily, he was always on the best horse and if they were stalkers or come from behinders he would always circle the field from the outside. any jockey with a license would have won with those horses. had joy scott been on those same horses she would have won 5000 races and been in the hall of fame, or any other jockey you can name no matter how bad they were.

I thought there would be more negativity, but I’m ready for that.” He said he recalls a day in the 1980s when he was riding with the legendary Bill Shoemaker, who was booed by the crowd after losing aboard a favorite. “That’s when you know you’ve made it, when they boo you,” Shoemaker told Stevens.
