He won over 40% of his turf mounts at the deepest jockey colony(saratoga 2012) in history. The best 2 American turf jocks I've ever seen were Fernando Toro and Jerry Bailey, and Ramon is equal or better than both of them.On dirt,it is a littlke different.Ramon's patient style,taylor-made for turf, and endearing to owners because Ramon's mounts never come back the worse for ware,is not as suitable as Johnny Vs or Javy's style.2 year-old races, where early speed is king,is not Ramon's bag.Although Ramon will win one of the triple crown races eventually,ag,this is not his strong suit. However, his turf riding is BY FAR ,the best I,ve ever seen, and I go back to the mid 70's.No one in America could get that speed rat Little Mike to rate around 2 turns, not to mention THREE turns. That alone should lock up his hall of fame induction.

I never thought Jerry Bailey like that. I always thought of Jerry as a versatile rider.

Bailey was amazing on both, but interestingly,he did not fair well with young horses early on in his career(like Ramon).Bailey was incredible on turf riding for the best connections America had to offer(Mott,Frankel,Miller etc.).Until recently, because he stays north in the winter,Ramon wasnt getting rides from the "royalty" stables. That is starting to change:Chad Brown(Frankels ex asst.) used him this summer to incredible success,Pletcher is using him more(see txgiving weekend).
The reason I love Ramon(ive seen almost all of his rides since the bugboy days of 96), is that he made his bones the hard way riding every race, every day,no matter what the purse or class of those races.Def,the peoples champ. He is the eclipse winner for every guy who goes to the track on a Thursday, basically the track lifers like you and me.And a nicer guy you will NEVER find. And who is a better rider on turf in the world? That coke-head from England? Not in this lifetime.

Bailey one of my all-time favorites along with Gary Stevens.
