Re: How can Los Al have these purses?I guess the rise in takeout did help,
Anyone
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?Full cards, Good handle and good attendance. And the purses listed are dependent on a 10 horse field. If the race goes with less than 10 it takes a big drop.
Entries over there are insane. They offer a full card of book races and another 8-10 extras every day. This gives the horsemen a lot to choose from. Then they can take the biggest fields and use them to get a full card with full fields. It's magic! You would think the racing secretaries at the big tracks would notice how well this works.
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?Full fields?? You can't be serious...this must be an attempt at humor right? As for the purses, ask the quarter horse trainers at the quarter horse track how they enjoy running their 5k quarter horses for a 5k purse.
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?
The field size there except on trial nights is pathetic. Makes So Cal fields look like the Melbourne Cup. The handle there is awful, attendance? are your kidding. There are not 500 people there. I wonder where the heck the money is coming from. If they would run r6 furlong races there and be allowed to run claimers up to 16K or so, they would steal 90% of the horse population from the main tracks in Cal.
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?Well, I'm down there almost every week. Crowds are much better than HP and SA and the people are having a good time. And they are never begging for horses. TB races are difficult to get into because of the volume of entries.

http://equibase.com/static/chart/pdf/LA101912USA.pdf Handle and attendance are at the bottom. Says 800 people, so I was off. There is no handle to speak of. How this place is in business is incredible.
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?
calracing.com has betting figures archive for all the state tracks. http://www.calracing.com/racing-info/handle-reports/
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?I guess it's all in your perspective. This is a small track. People are there and spending money. Especially on the weekends. For a plant this size, they are packing them in. They do just fine. I go to SA during the week and it is a ghost town. There are more horsemen there than patrons.
And offering these kinds of purses will get attract more horses from across town. This time of the year, Los Al always raises their TB purses. Starting the first of the year they will have no 2year old races for several months. They dump this money into the TB purses and attract more horses. Of course the big numbers are dependent on a 10 horse field. If they don't get 10 the purse reverts to normal levels. This is pretty much a win-win situation for them. They have done it before and it has worked for them.
Re: How can Los Al have these purses?Packing them in??? Take away the jockeys and trainers extended family and you are lucky to get 300 people there betting the races. For example, when the All American horse won on Sunday, there were 120 people in the winners circle and 80 people in the grandstand.
