I never have more than 3-4 horses at the same time, its all I can afford and its as much I can mentally keep up with without spending my entire day dealing with the day to day issues that seem to pop up with them. I try very hard to always make sure my horses are well take care of when they are done racing. But I don't think you can ask owners to pick up more of the bills to subsidize horses that can't run anymore. Things like the purse deductions for CARMA are about as far as you can go.
Tracks should find away to come up with some money to support retired or unwanted racehorses. There is no way with a 9.00 Beer that some of that money could not go to the cause, or make the beer 9.50 and give .50 cents to the fund. Tracks raise prices on many items every year, people are numb to it, but instead of it going into the pockets of the track they could help the horses. Or do things and encourage fans to pitch in with small donations, jockey photo day, backstretch tours etc.
If you have owners like the losers that ran the 11 year old that broke down at fairs off a 3 year layoff, there is no help for horses who are owned by people like that. That is the sad fact of this sport.
