good article on plastic

A few years ago, a great horse crashed through a starting gate, was quickly reloaded, and then broke down after the start. Horse racing found itself caught in a PETA sandwich.......... But instead of instilling a rule that says any horse blasting through a gate is an automatic scratch, some began plowing up tracks and spreading synthetics.

Barbaro was never inspected properly by the track vet after breaking through the gate at Pimlico because NBC was behind
schedule showing the Preakness. Any further delays would cost huge advertising money.
