http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/52317/back-leg-injuries-tied-to-synthetic-tracks'A post-mortem report presented to the California Horse Racing Board Aug. 27 at Del Mar tends to support trainers who complain that synthetic tracks lead to more hind leg injuries. "This actually confirms that there are additional hind-end injuries on synthetic surfaces, which is what trainers have been telling us," said Dr. Rick Arthur, the CHRB's equine medical director.'

This is the part of the article that I am wondering about ( my highlighting): In 2008, 19 Thoroughbreds from a total of 111 that died on synthetic tracks in the state succumbed to catastrophic hind-end leg injuries, according to a preliminary CHRB/University of California-Davis report.
That compared to just one death as the result of a hind-leg injury among 65 Thoroughbreds that succumbed during racing or training on dirt tracks during the same period
Is that saying that 111 horses died on synthetics, compared to 65 on dirt tracks? Was that because fewer horses trained or raced on dirt during that time period?
I bet on a horse at ten-to-one. It didn't come in until half-past five. My horse was so late getting home, he tiptoed into the stable. ~ Henny Youngman

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... tic-tracks" Arthur said that in 90% of racetrack fatalities, the horse had a pre-existing injury that led to the catastrophic breakdown." The two questions Arthur fails to ask because he makes money off of the vet services. Are what are these horses with pre-existing conditions being treated with//cortisone/snake venom/de-nerving/ and which vet treating horses with a pre-existing condition HAS had the most catastrophic breakdown?

A higher % of horses that died from rear end fatalities were on synthetics

I hope your topic dig wasn't aimed at this Andy. My comments about synthetics have always been about handicapping and how bettors shouldn't blame the surface for their poor outcomes. As for safety and mandates, I have no skin in the game so my opinion is really irrelevant.

But that's just in California and since you have predominantly synthetics that's why that number is so much higher. I don't know what the # of races are, but I'm sure the synthetic number is the higher one.

I believe with racehorses, as with horses in general, the majority of injuries are to the forelegs, as they carry more weight/stress at speed. Was the effect on foreleg injuries discussed?

Oh heaven forbid AndyC, I would never criticize your opinions in such an obtuse manner - I would be much more blatant. No, this would be directed at another andy who believes polypoo is akin to the Antichrist. But thanks for asking.
