Question about Great Producing Mares??????

Postby Pointgiven3 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:12 pm

The 10 yr old Belong To Me mare Private Feeling has produced 2 graded stakes winners this year: The 3 yr old Kensei (Mr. Greeley) won the Jim Beam Stakes (G2) at Saratoga and the 2 yr old Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) won the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. This is a very impressive accomplishment and I imagine there are not too many other mares that have this distinction. My questions is does anyone know of another mare that has produced 2 graded stakes winners in the same calendar year?

Thanks to anyone who cares to respond :D

Yes, I'm pretty sure there are some. No names are coming to mind right now but others here can fill you in.

Sweet Tooth had Our Mims and Alydar winning stakes in the same year (1977.)

Weren't there full sisters who won stakes on the same day at the same track in California last year? (I don't know if they were graded stakes.) They were both by Cee's Tizzy or Tiznow, and had "Tiz" in their names. I can't remember their names so don't know the dam's name.

Slew's Tizzy and Slew's Tiznow, who are full brothers (Tiznow x Hepatica) had graded stakes wins in 2007.

Back in the Seabiscuit days there were Stagehand and his older brother Sceneshifter running in the same year, but I'm not sure if Sceneshifter ever won a stakes.

Probably Hasili has a couple of offspring who won graded or group stakes in the same year. She has 5 or 6 graded stakes winners among her "kids."

I wish I had time this morning to look this stuff up in my books this morning. I have several books about great mares and their offspring. (Matriarchs and Matriarchs II by Edward Bowen are excellent.)

Seems I've read that Miesque has accomplished that in Euro land but can't recall the reference. Or maybe I dreamed that.

And, how could Weekend Surprise, Up the Flagpole, and Prospector's Delight miss doing this? They were dropping Stake winners about every year.

A Grade 1 winner herself, Toussaud went on to produce Grade 1 winners Chester House, Honest Lady, Chiselling, and Empire Maker, as well as the Grade 1-placed and Grade 2 winner Decarchy..

Toussaud was a name that did come to mind but I couldn't recall if she had two graded stakes winners in the same year. She would seem to be the most likely.

More names have drifted into my mind: Weekend Surprise, Glowing Tribute. I don't know if they had graded stakes winners in the same year.

rarely are mares 1st foals good and when they have had 5 or 6 foals the quality generally goes down after that
