Mel Stute, Longtime California Thoroughbred Trainer

Postby Maryforney » Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:51 pm

Few trainers in California are as well respected and beloved as Mel Stute, who has been training here for more than 60 years.
He has won 12 training titles, including three at Hollywood Park and seven at Fairplex Park, where he is the all-time leader in races won. In 2006, he shared the third annual Laffit Pincay Jr. Award with his brother, Warren -- an award that is presented for integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction in the sport.

I caught Mel for an interview at Del Mar on 8-23-09, check out the video here.

It's where Mel wants to be- exchanging war stories with his fellow trainers at Clocker's Corner or shooting the bull in his stable office & then spending afternoons putting a few $$ through the windows. 8-)
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride-
& If dirt were dollars we'd all be in the black

Mel is the best. If his horses win a race, the drinks are on the house!!!! Just a great human being. Has some great stories about being late on the rent and
telling property manager to wait a couple of days till his horse wins at Agua Caliente.
