Will Del Mar still make owners pay to park? Del Mar is the only track in So Cal that penalizes an owner from having a horse on the grounds! I mean you already charge full price for early bird wagering (you're the only so cal track that does) and that's a crime! Why not try to encourage the racing owner and fan by not raping them for parking! Thank you for listening to my opinion!
I am all for you but you could use the same logic when it comes to bettors as well. Why should bettors get penalized for parking when they get anywhere from 16-24% confiscated from the betting pools?
My suggestion to the owners would be to use that take-out increase that you all supported to fund purses and buy a parking pass.
Sarcasm:the ability to insult idiots without them realizing it
Don't forget the beer. Last time I was at Del Mar they charged 8 bucks for a cup (it wasn't even the size of a glass). They're crazy. Beer is nearly as cheap as water. Most people, myself included, go to the track for recreation. I'd like to relax and have a beer but I'm not stupid enough (some would argue that statement) to pay 8 bucks for a pitcher of beer let alone a cup.
Del Mar has just become a crazy place to go to if you're a horse racing fan IMO. Parking was 8 bucks, last time I was there which is ludicrous. I remember the parking lot attendants words when I pulled into the lot. I said "how much." He said "8 dollars." I said What, in disbelief, then said why don't you just charge 20 bucks? I'm not cheap but Del Mar has gone over the edge in their pricing.
Look when it's less expensive to go to Saratoga, and believe me it's less expensive to go to Saratoga, then it should be clear that Del Mar is way over priced.
Del Mar being way overpriced, isn't doing the sport of horseracing any favors, for sure. How many new fans would put up with their prices? Let's face it horseracing today is not like the big 4 professional sports. They can get away with high prices because sports fans (for some unknown reason to me) have a "rooting" loyalty usually to their local team ( I believe most fans think they are part of the team because many fans casually use the word "we" a lot when referring to their team.) Team sports fans will pay the high costs. Horseracing has no such loyalty.
Sure betting the horses at Del Mar is fine. But I'm sure that there are places to bet the Del Mar races out there that are away from the track, and there is streaming video. So why pay 47 bucks for (parking, clubhouse admission for you and the spouse, 5 bucks each for seating, and 7 bucks for the form to sit on a hard bench seat and wait thirty minutes between races, while not being able to have a beer? Bet the races early at a casino, take the 40 bucks you save (deduct 7 bucks for the form), buy half case of bottle beer for 11 bucks, put the beer in a cooler, go down to Del Mar Beach with your laptop, take a dip between races, and drink a beer a race, and save yourself 29 bucks, for dinner that evening. If you must watch the races in person, then take the 29 bucks you saved for dinner, and bet it hope it wins and pays more than 63 bucks. Then go the next day and pay your 47 bucks and have dinner that evening, with the 29 from the bet, but you won't get to drink beer.
Owners' parking stickers are available to CHRB-licensed owners through the racing office.
