Jeff Tufts, longtime morning-line maker for Del Mar and Santa Anita, is leaving Southern California and relocating in Medford, Oregon.
Russell Hudak, who is the line maker at Hollywood Park, will succeed Tufts.
Tufts started making the morning line at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita in 1974. In 1982, he gave up the spot at Hollywood Park in favor of beginning his stint at Del Mar. In addition to his work at the seashore and at Santa Anita, Tufts did the morning line for Fairplex at Pomona.
Several years ago, Hudak, who succeeded Tufts at Hollywood Park, labeled Tufts “legendary.” Former Daily Racing Form line maker Brian Mulligan once called Tufts “one of the best in the country. The line that he makes at the track is usually very close to the line at post time.”
