After several replay views on the giant screens, it was determined that Sully of San Clemente nosed out three other racing wieners at Del Mar yesterday to earn a repeat berth and represent San Diego in the national final of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. Sully is the defending national champion.
“That was a crazy last race,” said Katharine LiMandri, coordinator of the 2010 races. “It was so fitting to require a replay to declare the San Diego winner. I hope all the dogs, owners and fans had a great time.”
The national final is Thursday, December 30th before the start of the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union. Eight regional winning dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale.
Sully and fifteen other dachshunds advanced to yesterday’s showdown on the turf at Del Mar by besting the times of 401 other dogs at the August 28th qualifer at Qualcomm Stadium. The others included Mila, Whimsy, Chaparrito, Jewels, Presley, Ruby Tuesday, Heidi Roo, Jake, KC, Charger, Truffle, Chili, Beega, Sammy Davis and Sammie.
This is the 14th year of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. The event is produced by the non-profit Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
Race sponsors include Wienerschnitzel, Bridgepoint Education, the Port of San Diego, San Diego County Credit Union, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, San Diego Channel 6, Jack-FM, 760 KFMB, Navy Dispatch, PennySaver and San Diego City Beat. Some of the proceeds from the event benefitted Rancho Coastal Humane Society.
